Trading computers are sold as a category of their own, with model names that sound like fighter jets and price tags to match. Under the hood, a trading PC is an ordinary desktop sized for three jobs: running your platform without a stutter, driving every screen you need, and never letting you down mid-session. Here's what a trading computer really needs, part by part, measured against what platform vendors officially ask for, and when building or buying one makes sense.

What a trading computer does differently from a normal PC

Nothing magical. A trading PC doesn't execute your orders faster: your order travels from the platform to your broker's servers, and the time it takes depends on the network far more than on the processor. What sets good computers for trading apart is less spectacular: enough video outputs for your screens, enough memory for your charts, quiet cooling for a room you sit in for hours, and a system that doesn't reboot itself for an update in the middle of the New York open. The best computer for trading is the one that matches your platform, not the fastest one on the shelf.

Part by part: what a trading desktop really needs

Processor

The vendors' figures are modest. NinjaTrader recommends a quad-core 2 GHz processor, Sierra Chart four cores as a minimum, TradeStation a quad-core 3 GHz chip for power users, Interactive Brokers an Intel i5 to i7, and ATAS a Core i5-6600 or Ryzen 5 1600 or newer. Any recent six or eight-core desktop processor goes well beyond. Extra cores help when you run several platforms side by side: Sierra Chart even suggests running several instances of the software to spread the load across the processor.

Memory

16 GB is the recommendation of Interactive Brokers, Sierra Chart and Quantower, and the right starting point. 32 GB earns its place if you run two platforms at once, keep a lot of tick history loaded, or trade order flow. Interactive Brokers notes that past 15 chart windows open at once, TWS itself may need more memory allotted. On a desktop, unlike many laptops, memory goes in within a minute: you can start at 16 GB and grow.

Storage

An SSD, as NinjaTrader, Sierra Chart and Quantower recommend. Order flow platforms store market data: ATAS asks for 80 GB of free space. A 1 TB SSD gives the system, the platforms and your history room to breathe.

Graphics card and monitor outputs

Charts are two-dimensional drawing, so the graphics card mostly buys outputs. TradeStation asks for 256 MB of video memory for one monitor and 1 GB or more for several. ATAS is the exception: 4 GB of video memory, DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4.0, and Vulkan rendering for its heatmap. Without a dedicated card, the motherboard's video outputs set the limit, often two or three. A modest dedicated card adds three or four. Power supply, cooling and noise

A quality power supply and quiet cooling matter more on a trading PC than on a gaming rig, because you spend whole sessions next to it. A case with large, slow fans keeps the room calm and the components cool, which also keeps the processor at full speed through a long session.

Network

Bandwidth needs are small, with one exception. cTrader asks for 100 kB/s and TradeStation 10 Mbps for power users, but ATAS asks for 30 Mbps at minimum and recommends 100. What matters more is stability: a wired Ethernet connection doesn't drop the way Wi-Fi does when the microwave or the neighbours join in.

A trading computer that crashes with a position open is worse than a slow one. Most of the protection costs little:

Set up Windows for a session without surprises

A well-chosen trading PC can still let you down for reasons that have nothing to do with hardware: an update that restarts the machine, a notification covering the buy button, a sleep timer kicking in halfway through a range. A few settings, done once, rule out most of it.

None of this costs a cent, and it's often what separates a reliable trading computer from a desktop that also happens to trade.

Should you leave your trading PC on overnight?

For discretionary trading, no. Your orders, stops and targets live at the broker, not on your computer: an open position doesn't depend on your PC staying on. The question arises for trading robots, MetaTrader expert advisors for instance, which only run while the terminal runs. Leaving a home PC on around the clock exposes it to power cuts, a router that reboots, the overnight update.

The usual answer is a virtual private server (VPS): a computer rented in a data centre, always on and connected through a stable line. MetaTrader offers one from within the platform itself, and many brokers provide one to their clients under conditions. Your PC then goes back to being what it should be: the tool for your session, not a server.

Upgrade your current PC before buying a new one

Before buying a new trading computer, look at what your current one can become. On a desktop, three upgrades cover most needs, in this order of payoff:

  1. Memory: moving to 16 GB, sometimes 32, is often the cheapest and most noticeable upgrade with a desktop platform and many charts.
  2. Storage: replacing a spinning hard drive with an SSD transforms both boot time and history loading.
  3. Graphics card: a modest dedicated card adds the outputs you're missing for a third or fourth screen.

The processor rarely gets replaced alone, because it often drags the motherboard and memory along with it. If it's very old, that's when buying new becomes sensible again. Check your Windows version too: the platforms above require Windows 10 or 11, and TradingView's app needs at least Windows 10 version 22H2.

Laptop plus dock: the alternative to a desktop

Between a laptop alone and a tower there's a middle road: a powerful laptop on a dock that drives two or three screens, a keyboard and a wired connection. You get the multi-monitor desk at home and keep the mobility. Two limits to know: a thin laptop runs hotter than a tower under sustained load, and a dock can't show more screens than the laptop accepts. Where to put your budget, and where not to

For the same budget, two trading PCs can feel very different depending on how the money is split. What pays off every day: a good main screen, at least 16 GB of memory, an SSD, a wired connection and a UPS. What pays off least: a high-end gaming graphics card, except for ATAS, a latest-generation processor when you run a single platform, and anything that lights up.

The rule that follows: size the machine to the most demanding platform you actually use, then spend the difference on what you look at and on what protects you. A desk that shows readable charts and survives a power cut beats a machine that quickly computes charts you then read badly.

Your trading journal on the trading PC

Your trading PC should spend its resources on the platform.
