The range of a session

A session's range is the distance between its high and its low. Over the last 20 sessions, the Nasdaq 100 covered on average 441.521 points, or 1.47% of its opening price; 569.019 points (1.93%) over 90 sessions and 488.472 points (1.81%) over one year. It is the same idea as the ATR, computed here on the daily candle without smoothing opening gaps.

What it changes for a stop, as a worked example and not a recommendation: a stop placed at half the average range of the last 90 sessions is worth 284.510 points, or 0.96% of the price. The value of one point depends on your broker's contract; whatever it is, to risk only 1% of the account with that stop, the position cannot exceed 104% of the account in exposure.

The full reasoning, with the percentage of capital and the reward-to-risk ratio, is in calculating position size and where to place your stop loss.

No candle exists at 21:00 UTC: that is the feed's daily break, not a quiet hour.

Reading by session: Asia (0:00 to 7:00 UTC) gives an average hourly range of 0.263%, London (7:00 to 12:00 UTC) 0.278%, and New York (12:00 to 21:00 UTC), which overlaps the end of London and the release of US data, 0.412%.

Nasdaq opens at 9:30 a.m. and closes at 4:00 p.m. Eastern time (Nasdaq): the most active hours found above, that is 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00 in London and 9:00, 10:00 and 11:00 in New York, are to be read against that opening, while the CFD is quoted almost all day in UTC.

What moves the price of the Nasdaq 100

Several forces recur in the reference documents, none of them sufficient on its own. Nothing here is a forecast or advice.

The Nasdaq-100 is designed to measure the performance of the 100 largest non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq, and it employs a modified market capitalization weighting, according to the methodology published by Nasdaq: the composition is reconstituted every December and, if any company's initial weight exceeds 24%, the weights are adjusted so that no company exceeds 20% and then, if those above 4.5% add up to 48% or more, their aggregate weight is brought down to 40%.

The index excludes financial and investment companies, and it reflects industry groups including computer hardware and software, telecommunications, retail and wholesale trade and biotechnology (Nasdaq Global Indexes): with capitalization weighting, the largest of these companies carry a large share of each move, and the caps above exist to bound it.

Interest rates matter for equity valuations: the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), which determines the stance of US monetary policy, holds eight regularly scheduled meetings a year, on a calendar the Federal Reserve publishes in advance.

Company results set the rhythm of the year: US issuers file with the SEC a quarterly report, Form 10-Q, with unaudited financial statements, for each of the first three quarters of their fiscal year, then an annual report, Form 10-K (Investor.gov, SEC).

The cash session, finally: the NYSE core trading session runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern time (NYSE), and Nasdaq opens and closes at the same hours (Nasdaq); the CFD, for its part, is quoted almost all day in UTC, which explains part of the gap between its close and the index's.

Tradoshi's backtesting module, in beta, replays a market candle by candle without showing what comes next, spread, slippage and commissions included, and it is included from the Pro plan. It is the most direct way to check whether a stop rule based on range holds over the past year. To understand the method first: what is backtesting and backtesting stocks, forex and futures.

The journal does the other half of the work: it measures your own trades on NAS100, their real R against the stop you placed and the hours when you win or lose, on your executed orders rather than on averages. Every statistic is defined in the glossary.

Method and limits

  • Source: Dukascopy historical candles, bid price, instrument NAS100. A data provider's bid price is not your broker's price: spread, quoting hours and time zone may differ.
  • Session: one daily UTC candle, Monday to Friday. Flat candles are ignored. The year counts 261 sessions, from 6 October 2025 to 6 October 2026.
  • Changes: the last session's close compared with the close 1, 5, 21 and 63 sessions earlier, and with the close of the first session of the rolling year.
  • Range: average of the distance between high and low over the period, in index points and as a percentage of each session's opening price. Per hour: same calculation on the hourly candles of the last 90 days.
  • Worst drawdown: largest fall between a close and a later close over the year, peak to trough.
  • Computed on 7 October 2026. The figures are recomputed when the site is rebuilt; the displayed date is authoritative.
  • The Dukascopy feed used here (USATECH.IDX/USD) is a CFD on the Nasdaq 100, quoted in points and in dollars, bid side, almost all day in UTC, well beyond the Nasdaq session (9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern time): the close of the UTC session is therefore not the official index close published by Nasdaq, and the two do not coincide exactly.
